London CNN —It’s Thursday, 11.00 p.m., and on a street in London’s Soho district, there’s a loud clatter. “People haven’t got the money,” she told CNN. “That’s when their bills started coming through, the first heating bills from the winter,” he told CNN. Even before the ravages of the pandemic, the number of London’s nightlife venues was in steady decline. They don’t just go out for the sake of going out now,” she told CNN.

London CNN —The former London home of rock legend Freddie Mercury is available to buy – that is, for those with a cool £30 million ($38 million) to spare. The property was bought by Mercury on the spot when he first visited it in 1980, according to Knight Frank, which is handling the sale. In this spirit, the dining room was painted citrus-yellow, reportedly Mercury’s favorite color, with complementary jewel tones in the cornices of the room. The property’s principal suite is entered through what used to be Mercury’s dressing room, where he stored his clothes and stage costumes. After more than 30 years taking care of them, Austin, now 72, auctioned about 1,400 of Mercury’s belongings last year, and is now looking to sell Garden Lodge for offers in excess of £30 million ($38 million), according to Knight Frank.

The Costumes of the Very, Very Rich

The night of the wolf moon — the first full moon of the new year — also happened to be the last night of the couture, when John Galliano recreated a decaying Paris nightclub in the vaulted caverns beneath Paris’s Pont Alexandre III bridge across the Seine. Crepe paper streamers the color of Madeira wine were draped across walls and dangled from the ceiling amid banged-up wooden bistro chairs and scratched-up tables. At the end, the audience members were so overwrought they didn’t just clap, they stamped their feet hard enough to make the floorboards shake. It has been awhile since anyone had experienced a world-building show quite like it. It looked tortured, in a way that is rarely considered acceptable anymore, and extraordinary at the same time.

CNN —In the five years Brian Cox played vitriolic media mogul Logan Roy in HBO’s boardroom drama “Succession,” viewers mostly saw him on-screen in a navy business suit and burgundy tie. Brian Cox's camel-hued leather trousers have caused a stir online. “I wish this app would stop showing me Brian Cox in those leather trousers and loafers,” added another. More recently, Joe Jonas has been praised online for his rotating selection of leather pants in red, brown, black and silver during the latest Jonas Brothers tour. Lo and behold, two decades on, everyone’s favorite faux-CEO is bearing his calves — and more besides — in leather trousers on prime-time television.

Then the competition exploded, with a half-dozen bidding paddles raised in the London salesroom, followed by a flurry of bids online and by phone. “The very piano on which ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was composed. The instrument,” the auctioneer Oliver Barker intoned as the bidding paused after spiraling into seven figures. Mercury composed many of Queen’s hits at the Yamaha. It was originally estimated to sell for at least $2.5 million in Sotheby’s 59-lot evening auction of the most desirable pieces from the collection offered by the singer’s lifelong friend Mary Austin.

Insider Today: IPOs' make-or-break moment

Speaking of fighting, the IPO market has been KO'd since 2022. But that could change with one company's upcoming public debut. Even if it slightly misses those numbers, it'll still be the largest public debut in the US since Rivian's IPO in late 2021. The stock market recovered in record time, but then something else held up IPOs: VC money. Tech has already led the stock market for about a decade — starting when Apple became the biggest company in the world.

[1/7] Freddie Mercury's signature crown and cape are displayed during Sotheby's 'Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own' press preview in London, Britain August 3, 2023. "We've conceived our gallery spaces to give it a sense of what it was like living with Freddie at home," said David MacDonald, head of single owner sales at Sotheby's London said. At the heart of the auction is Mercury's treasured, black Yamaha piano, estimated at 2-3 million pounds ($2.5-$3.8 million), on which he composed the 1975 Queen epic "Bohemian Rhapsody". "It was an extension of himself, his vehicle of creativity," Austin said of the baby grand piano. "He would never smoke at the piano or rest a glass on top of it and would ensure nobody else did either.

‘Wham!’ Review: They Made It Big, Then Broke Up
  + stars: | 2023-07-05 | by ( Wesley Morris | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The new documentary about George Michael, Andrew Ridgeley and the music they made as Wham! — it’s just called “Wham!” — found me in a moment of need for a nostalgic, fantastical elixir, something short, sweet and tangential to my feeling of national blues. For one thing, Wham!, the duo, made soul music that popped. And the movie dances past all of the thorny moral and ethical questions of white people making Black stuff. The disembodied voices of Michael and Ridgeley guide the whole thing — rumination and memory as narration.

(CNN) — Never-before-seen draft lyrics of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” suggest that Freddie Mercury considered giving his mock-opera anthem a somewhat different title: “Mongolian Rhapsody.”The discovery was made following the emergence of a 15-page folio of lyrics, vocal lines and harmonies handwritten by the singer as he composed his 1975 hit. Queen recorded “Bohemian Rhapsody” the next year. Sotheby's auction house said the handwritten lyrics present "untold insights into other possible directions the song could have taken." Lauren Fleishman for The New York TimesAn early draft of the lyrics to one of rock’s most famous songs contains a secret. When Freddie Mercury wrote Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” he originally seemed to have toyed with another title, which he then scratched out. What if we all found ourselves singing along to “Mongolian Rhapsody”?

CNN —The songs of Queen are known the world over, and the band’s body of work might soon sell for a staggering sum. A source familiar with the music acquisition tells CNN that discussions are “well underway” for Universal Music Group to acquire Queen’s catalog from Disney Music Group. The source added that the sale could surpass $1 billion and that the deal is “expected to close within one month.”CNN has reached out to Universal Music Group and Disney Music Group for comment, as well as a representative for the band. That sum remains arguably the highest amount a music catalog has sold for, but if the Queen sale goes through, a new record will be set. The billion dollar total for Queen’s music is surely that high thanks in part to the 2018 Oscar-winning film “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which told the story of the band’s inception with a focus on late frontman Freddie Mercury, thereby inspiring a resurgence in popularity of the band’s music.
CNN —An electric guitar smashed up and signed by the late Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain has sold for almost 10 times its estimated value. The instrument was the headlining item in a three-day auction of pieces of rock history. The guitar, which had been reassembled but remains unplayable, was originally valued between $60,000 and $80,000. According to Julien’s Auctioneers, who staged the sale, Cobain smashed the guitar up “during Nirvana’s seminal Nevermind era,” though no specific details were given. In 2020, the guitar played by Cobain during his 1993 “MTV Unplugged” performance became the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction, going for $6 million.
Some 1,500 items, including handwritten lyrics, art and collectibles from Mercury's London home, Garden Lodge, have been looked after by his close friend Mary Austin since his death from AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991. "For many years now, I have had the joy and privilege of living surrounded by all the wonderful things that Freddie sought out and so loved. "It was important to me to do this in a way that I felt Freddie would have loved, and there was nothing he loved more than an auction." Sale highlights will go on tour in New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong before the main London exhibition begins on August 4. Hundreds of items owned by Queen singer Freddie Mercury will be auctioned later this year. The auctions will include art he owned, along with notes, drafts of Queen songs, and costumes worn for concerts. One piece already on display at Sotheby's in London is a robe and crown worn by Mercury during Queen's final performances in 1986. Kin Cheung/The Associated PressMary Austin, Mercury's longtime friend and inheritor of his estate and belongings, made the "difficult decision" to sell the items, according to The Associated Press. Many of the items have been stored in Mercury's Garden Lodge home where she has lived since his death in 1991.

For a relatively stress-free Halloween ensemble, throw on a tux, top hat, a pocket square and some fierce red lipstick. To channel Ms. Kahlo this Halloween, you’ll need her signature unibrow (eyeliner or an eyebrow pencil should do the trick), a flower crown, red lipstick, a colorful blouse and a floor-length skirt.
